Twitter Lists: Legal Job Market

Enough has been said about using Twitter to find a job that I don’t feel the need to repeat it here.  For background reading and helpful tips targeted for a job search in the legal industry, I’d recommend Amanda Ellis‘s newsletter from September, 2009 (Attorneys Finding Jobs on Twitter).  She explains three ways in which attorneys can integrate Twitter into their job search.

Instead, I’d like to use this example – conducting a job search on Twitter – as a way to illustrate the benefits of using Twitter Lists to manage information. Continue reading

New Subscribers Will Receive Membership Details w/in 24 hours

Q: If someone subscribes to the newsletter before this Friday, January 29th at 11:59 pm, how does s/he access the members-only section of the site?  Sincerely, Inquisitive New Subscriber

A: Dear Inquisitive,

Great question!  I’m sure other people want to know this as well.  Thank you for asking.

Basically, once someone subscribes to the newsletter, I still need to add them manually to the site’s WordPress database.1

Every night this week, I plan to add the people who signed up that day.  Once I add a new user, WordPress automatically sends that user an e-mail with his/her username and password.

In other words, anyone who subscribes to the newsletter before Friday, January 29th at 11:59 pm EST can expect:

  • to receive a registration e-mail from WordPress with a username and password within 24 hours; and
  • to receive free membership, forever.

Most likely, each night this week, I’ll add people at around midnight EST.  I may add people sporadically throughout the day.  Nevertheless, I’d rather you be pleasantly surprised than anxious or disappointed, i.e., don’t bank on it.

Let me know if you have any further questions.  I love inquisitive readers.  x

1 If you’re really bored and want to know why, shoot me an e-mail and I’ll let you know.

Username vs. Display Name

If you can view this full post, it means you’ve successfully signed in. WAY. TO. GO.

I sent this in the “Password Issues Resolved” newsletter but I thought I’d post it here as well. In the future, announcements like this will be categorized under administrative.

The difference between your username and your display name.1

Your username is how you login to the site.  You are not able to change this.

You may, however, change your display name.  Your display name is how you look to the outside world.  E.g., This is the name that shows up if you leave a comment when you are logged in.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Round-Up: Am Law 200 Job Listings

UPDATE: I heard a few of you prefer Google Docs so I added a Google Docs version to the bottom of this post. If you haven’t told me which one you prefer, feel free to send an e-mail or leave a comment.

Round Up: Am Law 100 Job Listings, Backstory and Future

I’m glad so many people like the Am Law jobs round-up. I figured I owed you a long-overdue explanation about the column – why I decided to create it and where it is moving. So, stick with me and you’ll find the latest round-up at the end of the post.1

Long, long ago, when I was a job seeker, I longed for a service that compiled all the job postings in one place. Why did I have to visit Martindale, Lawjobs, Monster, Emplawyernet, PSLawNet, Craigslist, Vault, and firm websites to find jobs? No wonder they recommend to take your job search as seriously as a full-time job.

Recruiting firms have it a little easier if they subscribed to any of the products offered by Leopard Solutions, which are nothing short of amazing. (May I add that Laura Leopard is a genius?) For example, Leopard Jobs compiles a database of open jobs at over 460 firms and 80 Fortune 500 companies daily. No, wait, twice per day. Plus, they’re easily searchable by geography or practice area. Couple that with the Leopard Lists, which publishes information on every firm’s attorneys (e.g., name, e-mail, graduation year, law school, undergrad, practice area, specialty, & clients) and, you’ve got a winning solution to match openings with viable candidates.

The only problem? Well, the Leopard List is pretty pricey. To have access to the job listings in the North East only, it costs $1,250/year. For recruiting firms who compete on inside hiring knowledge, the product’s well worth the price.

But what about the everyday consumer? The qualified candidate who wants to apply on their own without a recruiter?2 Or, what about the recruiters who can’t afford the Leopard List?

With the utmost respect for Leopard Solutions, I figured I could come up with a reasonably priced alternative that would cater to the general public. And that was the beginning of the Am Law Job Listings column.

Since November, I’ve published this column for free. Those who subscribe to my newsletter gain access to the column a few days before I post it for everyone else. However, the plan is to move this column over to a members-only section of my site, as I mentioned yesterday.

Anyone who subscribes to my newsletter already and/or who subscribes to my newsletter before I implement the members-only section will have free access to the site forever. Otherwise, the cost to subscribe will be $8.00/month. My goal is to use the money that I earn from the subscriptions to update the listings more often – either by myself or hiring someone to help. (I also take donations or gifts!)

I hope you agree that this is a useful service and its just one of the many perks to which members will have access.

Now, back to the present. Here is the latest round-up of Am Law 100 job listings. I’ve switched to publishing with Zoho Reports rather than Google Documents.3 I think it’s easier for searching and sorting but let me know if you have any feedback.

1 Yes, this is the same round-up that was password protected when published last week. This was a way to show my appreciation for subscribing. Unfortunately, this past time, a few of the subscribers had trouble accessing the password-protected post. I had already started to think that I may need to change how I distribute the listings and this incident sort of sped up the process.

2 Note: If a job seeker signs up to search the Leopard List job board or to receive e-mail job alerts, they see mostly jobs posted by recruiting companies. They do not have access to the database of jobs posted by those 460+ firms and 80+ Fortune 500 companies.

3 Ironically, I saw how nicely professionally Law Shucks tracks layoffs and I got inspired. Hat tip to them!

Big Announcements, Site Changes, and Exclusive Content

How do you like RecruiterEsq’s new face?

I’m still working out the kinks to this new design but I’m liking the bright colors and spacious layout.

I thought I’d take a moment to explain a few site of the site changes.

First, I’ve changed the RSS feed to only include posts that I include on the blog.  (If you had subscribed to my previous RSS feed, you may want to resubscribe.1)

As for the blog section, this where I’ll post announcements like this one.  I’ll also post shorter updates about career, technology, or other topics relating to the legal industry.2

Longer career articles will be properly filed and located under career and longer technology articles will be filed and found under technology.  I’ll introduce these articles via the blog with either a brief post or an excerpt so that you’ll get notice via the RSS feed.

The career page will have easy access to all things career.  The technology page will have easy access to all things technology.  This way, you can navigate around one or the other and not be too overwhelmed.

This biggest change, however, is yet to come.  Within the upcoming weeks, I am going add a members-only section to my site.  Members will have access to additional resources and detailed articles that I do not post for the general public.  More importantly, this is where I’ll publish the Am Law 100 & 200 job postings columns.  [Note: the job board that I'm launching will always be available to the general public.]  Most importantly, I plan to charge for access.3

However:

  • Anyone who is already signed up for my newsletter will have their fees waived forever.
  • Same goes for those who signs up for my newsletter before I officially implement the members-only system.4

Thank you, early adopters!  Thank you!!

Each month, members will have access to at least one (1) updated in the following columns:

  • Round Up: Am Law 100 Job Listings
  • Round Up: Am Law 200 Job Listings

I will also publish at least one (1) in-depth career article and/or resource and one (1) in-depth technology article and/or resource.

Think of my newsletter on steroids.

Cost: $8.00

I’ll make another announcement and a last call but I thought I’d give you a heads up now.

1 You’ll know if you need to re-subscribe if you haven’t been receiving feed updates. Let’s hope you also check the website!
2 I can hear some of you ask, “Isn’t this all a blog?” Yes, technically, it is. But, blogs get bad reps so I decided to organize this one to appear more legitimate to blog naysayers.
3 Perhaps with the first month free? I don’t know. I’m still crunching numbers.
4 So, if you know anyone who should sign up and/or if you’d like to sign up for yourself, now may be a good time.
